smaller. faster. better.

after my last piece was finished it was put to me that maybe the larger pieces were taking to long so i was challenged to make smaller 3D pieces faster, some worked and some didn't..here's the results!

swarm 2...COLOUR!!!

I decided to introduce color into my next 3D investigation. I got books from the library in college (which has everything!!) and i tried to get from a cool color to a warm color without going to hot using reds and such.

I dipped the weights for the swarm in paint to give them more of a dominent role in the piece and graduated them upward as i went inward.

I used colored card matching the colors i had chosen and i suspended them using the same colr tread as the card also to nearly have a color dripping affect through the swarm!

Trying out Print

i decided to give print a go, i kept with the flight theme and made a print of a bird falling from the sky using a lino print, was fun!

go LARGER!!

After my previous smallerer swarm 3D piece i decided to allot bigger in the next swarm that i wanted to do.
I wanted alot of movemnent in this pice so io decided not to tie the line on both sides but to weight them and let them move freely, also i had attend a lecture that there was a breif part about optical illusions so i incorporated a weaving technique as the body of he swarm.

I thought the piece was quite nice in its form and particularly in the way it moved, the weights at the the bottom were a great bi-product and i feel i could utilize them more in the moving on my project...the project really feels like it's coming to life at this point!!

The Swarm

After my stippling colored drawings i decided i would like to explore the idea of creating a swarm in 3D that would show movement as you moved around it creating different shapes from different angles.

I toyed around with using paper to create both the swarm and frame at first

i decided to use a wooden frame for stability in the end and use the paper as the swarms for the delicate flow and this was the  result.

The idea behind making this small 3D piece was to experiment with the shapes of the swarms of birds, the frame is quite chunky and if i was to do it again it would be something i would address, but aside from the frame it's a nice deli-quite piece that opens the door to alot of possibilities!
